Roses are red….and they don’t like cold weather. Roses are tough plants, but If you live in a colder climate there is some care you need to apply to have years of enjoyment.
Taking Care Of Roses In Winter
- November is the time I would cut back the plant so that it’s small enough to be covered. Wearing some garden gloves is a good idea for this task.
- Loosen the soil with a hand rake just a bit around the stem of the plant and add a small amount of organic fertilizer like Milorganite for a little slow release feeding during the winter.
- If you have some leaves left over from all the raking make a pile around the base of the plant to add insulation to protect it from the harsh cold temps that may be coming your way.
- Cover the plant, either with a Styrofoam cap or planters that come in many sizes, or you can wrap the roses in burlap a few times to create a blanket.
