How To Pick Bedroom Paint Color

Your bedroom should be a place of rest and relaxation. Annie, Ace's Paint Expert, has some tips so you don't lose sleep over choosing the right color for your bedroom.

How To Pick Bedroom Paint Color

Get your bedroom paint color right the first time with my color tips.

Tip #1 – Decide what you want the room to feel like. I like to narrow it down to 2 options. Do you want the room to give you energy OR do you want the room to be a place of relaxation?
If you answered energy, then gravitate your search to warm colors. Warm colors include:
Red and Orange, like Wild Flower 2090-40. They offer excitement, energy and emotion in the room.
Yellow tends to make people feel optimistic and cheerful like Pale Moon OC-108

If you said relaxation, then focus your attention to cool colors.
Green is serene and fresh like High Park 467
Quiet Moments 1563 is a wonderful blue that offers a soothing and calm feel.
Another great cool color is purple, which is spiritual and creative. I love Hint of Violet 2114-60.
For example, I want a cool color for this room because a calming place for me to relax after a long day at work is exactly what I need. I tend to gravitate towards blues because it reminds me of the ocean, which is where I’m most relaxed. Ready for the next tip?

Tip #2 – Once you have a color in mind, here’s how you narrow it down to what shade you’d like. Look around your house and see if there’s something that matches the color that you can use as inspiration.  It could be a blanket, a photograph or a piece of art that you purchased because you just love it. For example, I just love this pillow, I found it shopping in Seattle and brought it all the way home in my suitcase. I know if you look around your house you will find something to provide that inspiration.  Ready for my next tip? Tip #3 – Now, this tip comes to mind if you’re now trying to narrow down between a dark color in the room or a light color in the room.

There are so many shades, so how do you narrow down which is right for the space?
It comes down to 2 things, do you prefer a room to feel cozy or airy?
Your probably wondering, what’s the difference.  A cozy bedroom typically means a dark shade of the color you have in mind. A dark color is more dramatic and intimate.
A airier color is a lighter shade and will make the room feel larger.
For my bedroom I want it to be more dramatic and look different from the rest of my house, like I’m some place new and it’s a retreat so I’m going to choose a dark blue.
Tip #4 – Alright, I’m nearly there. I’ve decided on a dark blue color but before you lift a paint brush I want to share with you a way to actually see it in the room! Acehardware.com has a color visualizer. I am a visual person so seeing an idea on how it will look really helps me out. All you need to do is upload a photo of your room and choose the blue colors. Once you’ve narrowed down a few colors from seeing it on your computer, head on over to your local Ace Hardware!
Tip #5 – This leads me to my last tip, pick up a few paint color samples. They can be tinted to the colors of your choice. This is a great way to see colors during different times of the day to make sure it’s exactly what want. Don’t just paint a brush mark, paint a larger like a 1 foot by 1 foot square. This way you can see the way it looks in all time of the day and make sure you are 100% sure it’s the color of your dreams. I don’t know about you but seeing color swatches on the wall, get me excited and giddy for painting day! This New York State of Mind 805 is stunning.
