Old man winter has enter your yard, but using your Big Green Egg does not have to come off the table. With a few simple adjustments you can keep the BBQ game going. Here are tips from Ace’s Grilling Expert, Chef Jason on how to maintain temperature when grilling in winter.
Cold Weather Grilling Tips For Your Big Green Egg
For Best Results – Use a grill cover and keep grill covered during winter
This prevents buildup of ice, snow and unwanted moisture
If possible, place grill in a somewhat wind sheltered area
This will keep windchill temps down
Allow extra time for warm up – 10-15 minutes (depending on outside ambient temps)
Do not use torches or fluids to light the lump charcoal. Use fire starters in the winter months
Firestarters allow the egg to come up to temp gradually and will help prevent temperature shock cracking
If using any egg-cessories like conveggtor, pizza stone, etc…
During winter months I store all Egg-cessories inside to help prevent temperature shock cracking
Preheat Conveggtor or pizza stone in oven to 200 degrees
Use heavy duty heat proof gloves and marry the warmed conveggtor or pizza stone to the preheating egg, at the 200 degree temperature mark
Cook as you would in warm weather temps after grill is fully pre-heated
Allow grill to cool completely, close all vents and cover
